9:32 a.m. Mountain -- Greetings from Colorado Springs, where the temperature is...oh, never mind. No need for me to rub it in.

We actually arrived last night, taking a charter flight immediately following practice in Grand Forks.

The team has elected to make the Colorado College and Denver trips a day early in recent years, flying out on Wednesday evening. Much of it has to do with the altitude. The team was able to get in a light workout upon arrival last night and that, coupled with being able to spend a full Thursday here, should help their bodies adjust. When making the trip out on a Thursday, the players would essentially go straight from the airport and onto the ice, immediately fully exerting themselves.

UND's past two trips to Colorado Springs have resulted in three wins in four games -- a tiny sample size, to be sure -- so maybe there's something to it.

I do get asked by a lot of people if the elevation is noticeable, and it most definitely is if you exert yourself. So I have nothing to worry about.

9:54 p.m. Mountain -- Twelve hours later, a longer-than-normal road Thursday is in the books.

Athletics director Brian Faison made the trip, and spent part of the day at the National Collegiate Hockey Conference offices. He also brought NCHC Director of Operations Joe Novak to UND's practice, and I had the pleasure of meeting him in person for the first time. By all accounts, Joe is a fine person and a good hockey man, and I suspect he'll be a tremendous asset to the new league.

It was a busy day for Brian, who also had dinner with legendary UND swimming coach Mike Stromberg. Stromberg resides in Colorado Springs these days, where he is the head coach of the highly successful Falfins Swim Club.

Practice was highlighted by the "General," Stephane Pattyn, capturing the weekly Thursday shootout competition. As is the tradition, Pattyn's "reward" for winning the shootout was to receive a playful pummeling from his teammates, although it appeared freshman Bryn Chyzyk ended up taking the worst of it.

So ends another day on the road. I'll have more updates tomorrow, including Friday's lineup. I'll also check in early in the day if anything notable emerges from the team's morning skate.
