Menís track lands trio of recruits for 2013-14

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head track and field coach Kevin Galbraith announced today that prep standouts John Hoplin, Ian Collins and Tyler Olson have signed National Letters of Intent for the 2013-14 season.

Hoplin, who was also recruited by schools such as Minnesota and Nebraska, is a native of Grand Forks, N.D., and attends Red River High School. He is the No. 4-ranked javelin thrower in the nation for the Class of 2013 and ranks as the No. 6 all-time javelin thrower in North Dakota high school history. Hoplin was the North Dakota state javelin champion in 2012 and was the state runner-up in 2011. He placed fifth as a freshman in 2010. He was also a member of Red River High School’s 2012 North Dakota state basketball championship team and was a starting wide receiver on the football team. Hoplin’s older brother, Luke, is an offensive lineman on UND’s football team, and his dad, Jeff, also played football at UND.

Collins is a native of Edina, Minn., and attends Edina High School. He was the No. 2 returning thrower in the state of Minnesota in both the shot put and discus after participating in the 2012 Minnesota state track meet in both events. He was also a state participant in the shot put in 2011. A dual-sport athlete, Collins was also an All-Lake Conference offensive tackle for the top-ranked football team in the state.

Olson is a native of Buffalo, Minn., and attends Buffalo High School. Is the No. 4 returning 400-meter dash runner in the state of Minnesota after placing seventh at the 2012 state meet. He also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash at the 2012 state meet. Olson is also a starter on Buffalo High School’s soccer team.

The University of North Dakota is in its first season of membership in the Big Sky Conference.
