GRAND FORKS, N.D. - With a clear field, two new coordinators and 78 eager football players, the North Dakota football team was finally able to get its first practice of the spring season underway on Friday at Memorial Stadium. The weather conditions were not ideal, but that did not deter the team from having what head coach Chris Mussman deemed a "focused" first practice.

"It was good to finally get out on the field and start working with this young team," Mussman said. "I thought both sides of the ball were really focused today. They did not let the weather distract them and all-in-all it was a good first day."

There were some familiar voices absent from the session that saw snow fall through the 90-minute session, but the two newly annointed coordinators quickly injected their brand of coaching into the first of 15 scheduled spring sessions.

Both Josh Kotelnicki, on the defensive side of the ball, and Luke Schleusner, on the offensive side of the ball, have risen through the UND ranks from players on the 2001 National Championship team, to assistant coaches all the way to their new respective titles of defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator.

Notebook
- Former UND defensive lineman and tight ends coach Jeff Richter will join Greg Breitbach's staff at Millersville University. Richter's exact position has yet to be determined.
- Sophomore defensive back Dwayne Brown has left the team and will not participate in spring drills.
- Mussman reminded his team that Friday's first practice is just one day on the journey to bigger things in the fall.  He implored the team to keep building towards that goal brick-by-brick.
- Redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Mollberg connected with senior wide receiver Greg Hardin on a pair of deep passes that were made even more impressive by the elements.
- Senior linebacker Cordero Finley spoke to media members afterwards and applauded the strong leadership Kotelnicki has shown since taking over as D-Coordiantor in January. The focus of the defense this spring is centered around three T's: teaching, tackling and turnovers.
-  Mollberg, Hardin, Finley and sophomore safety Baylee Carr all spoke to media representatives from Fox, WDAZ and the Grand Forks Herald following the practice.
