GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s tennis team fell to Southern Utah University by a score of 6-1 on Saturday in Big Sky Conference play.

"Today was a better effort. We played one of the stronger teams in the Big Sky Conference," head coach Tom Wynne said. "We tried some new techniques and they worked pretty well."

UND honored seniors Megan Sween (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Mindy Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn.) for their four years on the team before the match.

Southern Utah earned the doubles point, winning all three matches.

In singles action, Lawrence was North Dakota’s lone winner. She defeated Afton Staheli by scores of 7-5, 7-5 in No. 6 singles. The fitting Senor Day victory was Lawrence’s first Big Sky Conference singles victory.

"It was nice to finally get a win because I've had ups and downs so it's nice to finish on a high note," said Lawrence. "This will definitely give me momentum and confidence going into the last weekend against Idaho."

"She has always given 100 percent," said Wynne when reflecting on Lawrence's time at UND.

North Dakota will play its final two matches of the regular season next weekend when they take on Idaho State at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 12 and Weber State on Saturday, March 13.
