GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota director of athletics Brian Faison announced the hiring of Tim Swanson as the head coach of the men’s golf program on Friday. Swanson replaces long-time UND men’s golf coach Rob Stiles, who had come out of retirement to lead the program on an interim basis for the last two seasons.

A veteran of the golf industry as both an instructor and accomplished player, Swanson spent the 2012-13 academic year as the head girl’s golf coach at Central High School in Grand Forks. He led the Knights to the 2013 Class State Tournament.

Swanson is a licensed Class A-13 professional with the PGA of America and the Minnesota Section of America. He also brings a wealth of knowledge on the game and over 20 years of successful management in the private and public golf facilities to his new post at UND.

“Tim brings a great passion for the game of golf along with a solid reputation as a teacher of the sport to this position,” Faison said. ”He brings a unique set of skills to the program that will help our student-athletes prepare academically and competitively for Big Sky Conference competition in a year.”

Prior to his one-year stint at Central High School, Swanson was the general manager and head PGA golf professional at the Faulkwood Shores Golf Club in Howell, Mich., for 12 years. He held similar positions at the Southern Hills Country Club in Sioux City, Iowa (1994-97) and Two Rivers Golf Club in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota (1987-94).

“I’m excited to head a Division I golf program,” Swanson said. “This will be a new endeavor for me and it gives me the opportunity to share with these young men my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience within a game that I have been a PGA Professional in for more than 23 years.”

The UND men’s golf will compete one more season in the America Sky Conference before moving the program to the Big Sky for the 2014-15 season when that league renews its sponsorship of the sport.
