GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Four University of North Dakota players are staying sharp this summer in collegiate sponsored summer leagues. Senior Taylor Petersen, along with juniors Andrew Thome, Matt Wehrli and Jeff Campbell are scattered throughout the country in different leagues, impressing in the early going.
Thome is pitching in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. This league has produced countless major league stars, including Robin Ventura, Chuck Knoblauch, Mark Teixeira and Matt Weiters, just to name a few.
Campbell is manning first base for the Rochester Honkers in the nearby Northwoods League, Petersen is primarily at designated hitter for the Hays Larks of the Jayhawk League and Wehrli is patrolling the outfield for the Auburn Wildcats in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League.
UPDATES AS OF JUNE 16
Thome threw just four strikes in the first inning, loading the bases on a pair of free passes and a hit batsman before settling down in his debut Sunday. His impervious outing yielded just five hits over seven innings of shutout baseball in a 4-0 win.
Campbell finished off his sophomore campaign on a hot streak, hitting .379 over his last 28 games and was named to the Great West Conference All-Tournament Team. He has seven hits in his last four games for the Honkers, including three two-hits games and his first homer of the summer season.
Petersen is hitting .356 with a pair of homers and 17 RBI, helping Hays to a 13-1 record through June 16. The senior-to-be is playing primarily as the Larks' designated hitter.
The junior-to-be has hit safely in seven of his eight games for the Wildcats, driving in runs in five of those contests. He's batting .375 with nine RBI through the early going.
