GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Collegiate student-athletes are often measured by their accomplishments in competition and in the classroom. However, a third component of the student-athlete experience that is vitally important, but often overlooked, is community service. In 2012-13, the University of North Dakota’s student-athletes once again passed the latter with flying colors.

UND’s 416 student-athletes logged 7,660.3 hours of community service during the 2012-13 school year, averaging 18.41 hours per student-athlete. It was the most total volunteer hours since UND Athletics started officially tracking community service hours in 2008-09. It also represented an increase of more than 1,000 total hours from 2011-12.

“Giving back to the community that supports us so generously is critically important to the athletics department,” said UND Director of Athletics Brian Faison. “It’s gratifying that our student-athletes and coaches have embraced service to the community.”

Head coach Eric Oakley’s softball team averaged a department-high 47.49 hours of community service per student-athlete, while head coach Chris Mussman’s football team led the way in total hours with 1,265.25.

Each one of UND’s teams either totaled more than 200 hours of community service or averaged at least 10 hours per student-athlete.
