GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota has earned its sixth-consecutive Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, according to a recent announcement by the organization. UND's 3.546 combined team GPA ranked tied for fifth in all of NCAA Division I, its eighth overall appearance on the list.

“I’m always amazed at teams that can compete over both academic semesters and still manage to be as successful academically as our women’s basketball team," said Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services Amanda Hajdu. "This is wonderful recognition for the team, confirming that their efforts academically are not going unnoticed for many years, even nationally!”

The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes women's basketball teams across the nation in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA, and junior/community colleges that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2012-13 season is the 18th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.

"Academics will always be a priority here at the University of North Dakota, as well as a criteria to be a part of the women's basketball team," said UND head coach Travis Brewster. "This shows we are continuing in the right direction; it's an exciting achievement for our team. Thank you to Amanda Hajdu and Stacy Bjorlie in academic services for their efforts. The team will embrace the challenge again next year."

Utah Valley took top honors with a 3.639 GPA, just ahead of DePaul and St. Francis College (3.625).  Three Big Sky Conference members cracked the top 25 with North Dakota fifth, Eastern Washington tying for 14th and Northern Colorado 25th.

A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.

"The GPAs produced this year by each of the Top 25 teams are quite remarkable," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "The coaches of these teams have done a terrific job encouraging their student-athletes to perform at their best both on the court and in the classroom. Congratulations to these 114 programs. I wish them each continued success."
