Daily Report

Report day is a busy one for all the newcomers to the North Dakota football team. There are 25 total this year and today is when they all move into the dormitories, get acclimated a little bit to Grand Forks and meet the coaching and support staff at a newcomer's dinner.

Following the dinner, it is down to business for all 95 football players permitted to attend fall camp. The squad will converge on Gamble Hall for the initial team meeting of fall camp.

Head coach Chris Mussman will set the tone for the next four weeks, go over rules and policies and also provide players the chance to introduce themselves in front of the entire team.

From there, the team will break up into position groups where playbooks and expectations will be dealt out by the assistant coaches.

What's on tap for Friday
The players are not quite ready to hit the field just yet as day two of fall camp is set aside for physicals that last all morning and a compliance meeting that will cover most of the afternoon.

Student-Athlete Spotlight: No. 53 Garrison Goodman
There may not be many players on the UND football team carrying more excitement heading into fall camp than senior linebacker Garrison Goodman. The San Ramon, Calif., native had his junior season cut short due to injuries and missed all of spring football, so after nearly 10 months away from the field, Goodman is ready to see what fall camp has in store for him.

"I just started running full speed again here in the last week, so that is encouraging for me," Goodman said. "It's my last chance to hit somebody as hard as I want legally, so yeah, it's going to be exciting to get back out there."

Goodman is one of 18 seniors on this year's roster who will be looking to improve on a 5-6 overall record and 3-5 mark in Big Sky play. And, he knows what to expect and as a leader on the squad will pass that along to those newcomers, who arrived in Grand Forks today.

"Fall camp is grueling. It is a mental and physical gauntlet and it's not necessarily the most fun thing, but you realize everyone else across the country is doing it," Goodman said, "But, as much as it is hard and difficult, it is that much fun too and it's great to be back around the guys and that's how you really build your team.  When, you're out there struggling together - that is when it starts. This is the beginning of the season and we're all looking forward to it."

After two years as a reserve where he played in all 22 games as a redshirt freshman and sophomore, Goodman was finally slated to be one of the starting middle linebackers in UND's 3-4 defensive scheme. Unfortunately, Goodman was only able to start five contests and play in seven total during the 2012 season.

Despite the limited action, he still ranked among the top three on the team in tackles with a career-high 47. He also earned the respect of his teammates as they named him one of two permanent captains for the 2013 season. Goodman will be flanked by fellow classmate and best friend Blair Townsend in that capacity.

"It was really unexpected (to be named captain)," Goodman said. "I am a pretty harsh critic of myself and I didn't even play half the season, but it really meant a lot to me. For the guys to come to that conclusion and name me captain is an honor for me.

"It will be a challenge too because now I have a different relationship with some of the guys. I can't always be buddy-buddy with everyone," Goodman said. "It's a different dynamic. Now, I'm kind of the liaison between the coaches and players, so some of my conversations will be about official business instead of just, 'hey, what's up?'"

If you ask head coach Chris Mussman what his defense missed the most in 2012 when the unit struggled at times, he'll quickly answer with, "a healthy Garrison Goodman".

It is Goodman's intensity and passion that the defensive side of the ball needs and Mussman is glad to have his man in the middle back for one last go-around.
