GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- A balanced attack led host North Dakota to a sweep of South Dakota State (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday afternoon in the UND Classic. UND had four players with seven kills or more led by nine from senior co-captain Ronni Munkeby and eight more from the other co-captain, Lisa Parlich.
North Dakota picked up its first win of the season thanks to an impressive defensive showing. UND held the Jackrabbits to just -.019 hitting in the match and SDSU did not hit over .000 in a single set in the loss. UND generated six total blocks, including three solo blocks, one apiece from Lexi Robinson, Emily Asche and Munkeby.
UND was in control of the match throughout, never trailing by more than two points at any time in all three sets. North Dakota used a 13-3 run in the first frame to get out to an 18-10 edge and closed it out with a 25-13 final.
The second set saw a nearly identical run as UND turned a 7-5 deficit into a 17-11 lead, the final point in the run a service ace by McKenzie Hart. It was one of eight aces on the afternoon for North Dakota.
In the final set, UND pulled away after a slight 17-15 advantage. From there, the home team scored eight of the final 10 points. Freshman Anna Pioske killed four balls in that final set on 11 swings as UND hit .214 for the match.
Nikki Husfeldt and Ellen Krueger split time at setter with Husfeldt garnering 22 assists and Krueger adding 10. Lauren Clarke chipped-in 22 digs for North Dakota.
UND will closeout its tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match tonight against Texas A&M, who lost a gripping four-set duel with No. 15 Iowa State earlier in the day.
