GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota Department of Athletics announced today the North Dakota Strong campaign to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research during the upcoming month of October.

All proceeds from this University of North Dakota Athletics fundraiser will be donated to Mayo Clinic for breast cancer research and will benefit the community of Grand Forks, including patients of Altru Health System, a proud member of the Mayo Clinic Health Network. The fundraiser will be highlighted by t-shirt sales and a unique hockey jersey auction.

UND Athletics competitions included in the North Dakota Strong campaign include:

·         October 18-19 women’s hockey series against Ohio State

·         October 19th football game against Sacramento State

·         October 24th volleyball game against Montana

·         October 26th men’s hockey game against the U.S. Under-18 Team

During these events, UND Athletics will be making announcements and taking donations while teams will show support for the campaign on the field, court and ice.  During the men’s hockey game, the team will wear special one-time jerseys with pink in the design and those jerseys will be auctioned off at UNDsports.com. Visit UNDSports.com in early October for the start of the auction that will run through October 29th and 30th and will end in 30-minute increments for each individual jersey. The jersey design will debut during UND Hockey Fanfest this Sunday, Sept. 22. North Dakota Strong t-shirts will be available at officially licensed UND retailers. The price of the shirt is $20 and all proceeds will go towards the donation. The shirts are expected to be in stores the first week of October.

Men’s hockey junior forward Mark MacMillan, whose family has been affected by breast cancer, has served as a lead organizer for the campaign.

“I think everyone is, or has been, affected by breast cancer in some way,” said MacMillan. “Whether it is your immediate family, someone close to you, or someone close to a friend, breast cancer is far too common. I lost a grandmother whom I never had the pleasure of meeting. I also have two aunts who have been diagnosed with the disease. Thankfully, both of them have been able to win their fight. Finding a cure is incredibly important so we can have more success stories like my aunts. Events like the North Dakota Strong campaign are a great start, and we are all looking forward to being a part of it.”

For fans who are unable to attend the games but wish to make a donation, a check can be made out to “Altru Breast Cancer Coalition” with “North Dakota Strong” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to UND Athletics at 2751 2nd Avenue North Stop 9013, Grand Forks, ND, 58202.
