GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Junior goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen backstopped the University of North Dakota women’s soccer team to a new milestone helping the team earn its first Big Sky Conference win, defeating Eastern Washington, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s a tremendous weight to get off our shoulders,” first-year head coach Matt Kellogg said of the win. “All the hard work the girls have put into this season has finally paid off. I’m so happy for them to get the win that they much, much deserved.”

Hestadelen recorded a career-high 14 saves in the contest, to keep Eastern Washington limited to just one goal.

Freshman forward Zoe Foster led the offense, scoring UND’s first goal and taking five of the team’s seven shots on goal.

Eastern Washington opened the scoring in the 25th minute off the foot of Katy Allen, but it would be the Eagles only tally of the day.

As the first half was coming to a close, Foster netted her fourth goal of the season with the help from sophomore midfielder Caitlin Dahl in the 41st minute.

The Eagles took 18 shots, compared to just three by UND, in the first half, with 10 of those 18 being on target. Hestdalen turned away nine shots, while Foster’s goal was the only shot of the three to get on net for North Dakota in the half.

With an even slate to start the second, North Dakota pounced at the opportunity to get on top, and did just that less than 15 minutes into the new half.

Kirsten Olsen scored her second goal of the season, to give UND its eventual second game-winning goal of the year. Later in the waning minutes of the game, Andrea Hyduke score her second of the season, to secure the first Big Sky win for North Dakota.

Hestdalen turned away another seven EWU shots on goal in the second half to preserve the win.

North Dakota begins its final road trip of the season next weekend, stopping for a tilt at Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 18. Game time in Cedar City, Utah is set for 4 p.m. (CT).
