My name is Amanda Koep, and I am a redshirt freshman for the women’s hockey team. I wear the number 35 and am a goaltender here for UND. This year I will be giving you an inside look into what it’s like to be on the UND women’s hockey team.

For the third sweep this season there are many reasons to celebrate. Freshman wingman Amy Menke got not only her first collegiate goal, but helped contribute two goals on Saturday’s 5-1 win. However, Friday’s game was also a history in the making for head coach Brian Idalski. He achieved his 100th career win with the University of North Dakota women’s hockey team. Congratulations to the both of them for two incredible accomplishments.

For a spooky Halloween weekend, nothing scared us against the Beavers. It was a challenging week of practice before we arrived in Bemidji as we were a couple of teammates short because of the Four Nations tournament taking place in Lake Placid, N.Y., the following week. However, this was an opportunity to have everyone step up. With two W’s it’s safe to say everyone did. With this next weekend off, many players will head home for a couple days as we catch up with some family and friends. Nevertheless, we take on the mighty Gophers the following weekend and the whole team is very excited.

Even though we have this coming weekend off from games, it is giving us the opportunity to improve on fundamentals, systems and special teams. We also like to have a little fun and take this time to relax and even visit Greg, our team psychologist. Furthermore, it gives us the chance to catch up on some homework and classes that we’ve missed from traveling.

Entering November, about half way into the semester, midterms have arrived. With two tests coming up for me Tuesday, after morning practice, I look forward to my Harry Potter Tuesday night with several teammates that occur weekly at my apartment.

I can tell this is already going to be a year to remember. This is because the team’s chemistry is already incredible for a team with 10 incoming players. As a group we are always working hard to improve each other’s skill and make each other better.

The team’s main goal has been to play a full 60 minutes, each period at a time. Saturday, as a team, we accomplished that goal. Now, we just have to make sure we continue to work at it every weekend. As we all get extremely restless about the Gopher game coming up it will come down to our upcoming two weeks of practice. We can’t take a day off, and we won’t.

To start off Monday’s practice we will play a game of “three puck” as we celebrate the sweep. This is when we split up into black and green jersey’s and scrimmage with three pucks. Although, recently it’s been a ring, three pucks and two tennis balls, so there may be a new name in the works. One of my favorite drills is “Sioux circle”. It’s where you bring the nets up to the center circle and it’s three on three. Our team gets very competitive and we become so passionate about winning every time we play it, I absolutely love it.

Earlier in the season, I made my first appearance in the exhibition game against POE and I was beyond thrilled and blessed to receive the Hard Hat of the game. The Hard Hat is simply a symbol of the hardest worker or most deserving player or goaltender in that specific game. The Hard Hat is announced after every game to someone new.

This weekend’s Hard Hat went to coach on Friday night and Amy Menke on Saturday night. Congratulations to the both of them again.

All for now, thank you for reading!

Yours truly,

Amanda Koep :)
