MINNEAPOLIS – Stephanie Clarke won the 400-meters and Savana Weller (800-meters) and Ke-Ke Burks (weight throw) were the runners-up in their respective events as North Dakota opened the 2014 indoor track season at the University of Minnesota’s Northwest Open.
Clarke, an Edmonton, Alberta, native and UND’s all-sports Female Rookie of the Year last season, captured the 400 with a time of 58.68 seconds. In the same event, teammate Anne Van Heel (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) placed fifth with a time of 1 minute, 00.74 seconds.
Weller, a senior from Sauk Centre, Minn., ran a time of 2:15.81 in the 800-meters while Burks, a sophomore from Madison, Wis., finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 53 feet, 11 ¾ inches.
Clarke, Weller and Van Heel also teamed with freshman Alyssa Espinoza (Billings, Mont.) for a third-place performance in the 4x400 relay. UND’s quarter clocked a time of 4:00.14.
Another sophomore thrower, Molly Griep (Whitewater, Wis.), took third in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw. She recorded a shot put mark of 44-09.75 and a weight throw of 50-11.00. Teammate Chantel Urban (Jr., Surrey, N.D.) was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 42-11.50.
