OGDEN, Utah – Big Sky Conference officials announced the winners of its annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Cup on Friday as Southern Utah and Weber State tied for the top spot, while North Dakota tied for seventh with Sacramento State. SAAC Members from across the 11 Big Sky schools competed once again in a year-long competition that included three separate contests.
Each school held a “Quarter Drive”, solicited donations for a “School Supply Drive” and battled to accumulate the most volunteer hours from Oct. 15-April 15. UND’s SAAC members were able to collect 600 quarters during the first contest, then accumulated 510 points worth of school supplies in the second competition. SAAC members then logged nearly 3,000 hours of volunteer work during the six-month stretch of that phase of the Cup.
In all, the 11 Big Sky members logged more than 25,000 hours of volunteer work, collected more than $5,000 worth of quarters and donated thousands of different school supplies in the nine states that make-up the conference.
The Big Sky SAAC is comprised of current student-athletes and serves five functions: 1) addressing conference issues affecting student-athlete welfare; 2) providing feedback and distributing information from the NCAA; 3) increasing and improving student-athletes’ understanding of the legislative process; 4) promoting student-athlete participation in the legislative process, and; 5) providing a forum for addressing student-athlete concerns.
The Big Sky Conference SAAC has also made it a priority to promote volunteerism in each institution’s respective community.
UND’s 2013-14 SAAC officers included Katie Houdek (President, Women’s Basketball), Dayo Idowu (Vice President, Football), Nikki Husfeldt (Secretary, Volleyball), Katie Klapprodt (Treasurer, Women’s Basketball) and Dan Jacobson (Social Media Coordinator, Men’s Swimming and Diving).
