GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head men’s basketball coach Brian Jones announced on Tuesday that Texas prep forward Kraig Shields has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for his program beginning with the 2014-15 season. The 6-foot-8 Shields prepped at Lehman High School in Kyle, Texas.

“We are excited to welcome Kraig to our North Dakota family,” Jones said. “He is a young man who will bring a lot of value to our university, community and locker room. He possesses a high level of basketball IQ, athleticism and will be able to play several different positions for us.

“Kraig’s best basketball is ahead of him and he has the potential to be a very good player in the Big Sky Conference. We are looking forward to getting him up here this summer to start our individual development workouts where we will see tremendous growth in him as a player.”

As senior, Shields was named to the All-District 27-4A First Team after averaging a double-double for the Lobos. He averaged 10.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg and added 1.8 bpg. He also earned the team’s Loyal Lobo Award and was one of 16 Texas Class 4A “Big Men” showcased by Texas Basketball Magazine.

“Kraig is a great kid and a solid player with a ton of potential,” Shield’s high school coach Tom Acker said. “He has really worked hard to improve his all-around skill level. There are some areas that Kraig has to continue to work on, but I feel his potential is endless.”
