UND (10-23) got solid outings from its bullpen in the win with three pitchers combining to go 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball enabling the one-run advantage to be enough. Both UND-NDSU matchups this season featured early Bison leads followed by UND rallies to claim victory.
After NDSU (17-22) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, UND got its first run when catcher Taylor Petersen smashed his third homer of the season over the left field wall for a 2-1 score.
UND would take the lead in the next frame on a two-run bomb by sophomore Daniel Lockhert, his first dinger of the season.
While the long ball staked North Dakota to the lead, it was the defense that kept the advantage in favor of the home club. Three straight innings were ended with stellar defensive plays in the wet conditions after rain earlier in the afternoon. With a pair of runners on in the fifth,Tyler Follis snagged a liner with a diving stop to his right to end the frame. Follis added another inning-ending catch in the sixth when he climbed the ladder and snared a liner headed for left field.
Patrick Riewer was handcuffed on a liner right at him in right field in the seventh, but recovered in time to fire a missile at third base to cut down the runner for another defensive gem.
The UND bullpen was led by freshman Ellery Bresnahan, who came on in relief in the fifth and threw three innings allowing just a pair of hits to earn his first collegiate win. Junior Brock Johnson got out of the eighth and Jeff Campbell finished the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.
Petersen finished 3-for-4 with a single, double and a homer. Lockhert, Sam Alt, and Zack Trygstad all notched a pair of hits in the win.
North Dakota continues its homestand Friday with a a three-game series against Western Athletic Conference foe Grand Canyon. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
