Val Sussex was promoted to the director of the North Dakota Champions Club in April 2017, after a three-year stint as the associate director. The Champions Club is the general scholarship and annual fundraising arm of UND Athletics. She previously served at UND as a coach, administrator and student-athlete in the women's basketball program.
As director of the Champions Club, Sussex manages hallmark and high-impact Champions Club events in accordance with the Champions Club mission, which is to raise scholarship and program enhancement dollars for the UND Athletics Department. Sussex coordinates member relations activities and marketing initiatives to ensure club members stay updated.
The Champions Club raised nearly $2.8 million in cash gifts and commitments from over 2,700 memberships for student-athlete scholarships and athletics program support in 2014-15, marking the program’s ninth straight year of record giving.
Sussex (then Sannes) played for UND from 2004-05 to 2007-08, helping lead UND to a NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance as a junior and serving as a team captain as a senior.
After graduating in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in coaching, Sussex served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. During that time, she earned her master’s degree in education leadership from UND.
Sussex returned to UND Athletics in Sept. 2011 as director of women’s basketball operations and was elevated to assistant coach prior to last season. In 2013-14, she helped lead the program to Big Sky Conference regular season and playoff championships, as well as the first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in UND basketball history.
Sussex's family includes her husband, Jackson, and their children, Baker, and Lauren.
