GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The track and field season ended for the University of North Dakota in May, but for a pair of UND recruits – one an American, the other a Canadian – their competitive season remains in full swing.

Incoming freshmen Katelyn Weber, a St. Clair, Minn., native, and Natasha Brown, who hails from Edmonton, Alberta, will both have competed at elite-level meets by the time the calendar turns to August.

Weber competed in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Outdoor Championships last Saturday in Eugene, Ore., while Brown will represent Canada at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships July 22-27, also in Eugene.

UND head coach Kevin Galbraith said his program is starting to bear the fruits of its recruiting labor on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

“It’s nice to have high-level people coming in,” said Galbraith. “It’s great for the program and I feel blessed that they chose us. When you have people who have other options decide to come here, it’s big for our program. They’re both talented young women and we’re looking forward to working with them.”

Weber, a thrower who graduated from St. Clair High School, competed in the shot put at the U.S. Junior Championships where she placed 12th nationally with a throw of 43 feet, 1 ¾ inches (13.15 meters).

Brown, a product of both J.H. Picard Catholic School and the Capital City Track Club, was one of 42 Canadian participants announced yesterday by Athletics Canada to compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships. She will compete in the 100-meters, in which she is ranked second nationally in the Canadian Youth Division.

Both Weber and Brown were a part of UND’s 2014-15 freshman class announced earlier this month by Galbraith.
