The conquering hero came home today and he brought some hardware with him.

Former University of North Dakota captain Matt Greene, now an assistant captain with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, brought the Stanley Cup to Grand Forks and Ralph Engelstad Arena on Tuesday, two months after his Kings defeated the New York Rangers in five games in the Stanley Cup Final.

Thousands of UND hockey fans lined up outside Engelstad Arena for their chance to take a picture with hockey’s holy grail during a public viewing event inside the main lobby of the arena.

Greene, a Grand Ledge, Mich., native, elected to bring the Cup to his alma mater – with a brief stop in his native Michigan -- during his allotted day with the trophy.

"It's an unbelievable place to go to school," Green told media members at a press conference on Tuesday. "It's a great place to live, great community and the program is No. 1 in the nation."

Greene played at UND for three seasons from 2002-03 through 2004-05, and captained the team to the NCAA Frozen Four championship game in his third and final year. He has since gone on two win a pair of Stanley Cups with the Kings during an NHL career that has spanned more than 500 games with L.A. and Edmonton.
