GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Freshman forward Brock Boeser and sophomore goaltender Cam Johnson hauled in more National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) hardware on Monday, earning NCHC Rookie of the Week and Goaltender of the Week honors, respectively, from the conference office.
The duo was front and center in North Dakota’s conference sweep at Western Michigan last weekend, a sweep that gave the Fighting Hawks sole possession of first place in the NCHC. It resulted in the fourth Rookie of the Week award this season for Boeser and the fifth Goaltender of the Week nod for Johnson.
Boeser scored the game-winning goal each night against the Broncos and totaled three goals and one assist in the series. The Burnsville, Minn., native scored both goals in Friday’s 2-0 victory and added a goal and an assist in Saturday’s 2-1 win. He emerged from the weekend with 18 goals on the season, tied for the most in the NCHC and the most by a UND freshman since T.J. Oshie (24) and Jonathan Toews (22) in 2005-06.
Johnson stopped 59 of 60 shots in the series, including a 31-save shutout on Friday. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Troy, Mich., product, a total that ties him for the NCHC lead and ranks him fifth in UND single-season history. In Saturday’s series finale, Johnson turned aside 28 of 29 shots to improve to 13-1-1 on the season. Johnson leads the entire nation in both goals against average (1.31) and save percentage (.948), the latter ranking as the best in program history.
The Fighting Hawks (22-3-3, 13-2-1-1 NCHC) are idle this week and return to action Feb. 12-13 at Denver.
