GRAND FORKS, N.D. – A week after competing at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship, three University of North Dakota student-athletes officially learned today that their season would continue.
Junior throwers Molli Detloff and Katelyn Weber, along with sophomore pole vaulter Kyley Foster, were among those who qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships scheduled for May 25-27 in Austin, Texas. Detloff qualified in both the hammer and discus throws while Weber advanced in the shot put.
Detloff, a native of Elk River, Minn., won the Big Sky Conference championship in the discus last week but her NCAA Preliminary mark occurred on March 17 at Charleston Southern, when she recorded a throw of 178 feet, 3 inches (54.33 meters). She qualified for the hammer on May 5 at the NDSU Tune-Up when she broke her own school record with a throw of 202-06 (61.72). Detloff is the only athlete in UND history, male or female, to eclipse 200 feet in the hammer throw.
She was named the Most Valuable Athlete of the Meet last weekend at the conference championship after winning the discus and placing second in the hammer and fifth in the shot put.
Weber, who hails from St. Clair, Minn., qualified in the shot put with a school-record throw of 49-04.5 (15.05) at the NDSU Tune-Up on May 5. She was the runner-up in the event last weekend at the Big Sky Conference Championship.
Foster qualified with a school-record pole vault of 13-03.75 (4.06) on April 13 at Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Meet. The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native topped her own previous school record of 12-06.25 (3.82).
