Grand Forks, N.D. -- Fourth-year assistant coach Joel Schwenzfeier picked up an extra responsibility on Monday after North Dakota head coach Bubba Schweigert put him in charge of coordinating the Fighting Hawks' recruiting efforts going forward.

The Hallock, Minn., native will add the role of recruiting coordinator to his current duties as the program's outside linebackers coach.

"Joel has been part of the program as a player and now as a coach for several years. He has a very good understanding of the type of individuals that we want to invite to be a part of our program," Schweigert said. "He also has a strong understanding of what UND is all about and has built solid relationships both on campus and in the city of Grand Forks.

"For the past three years, Joel has also done an outstanding job representing our program on the road in the regions that we recruit and I felt like this was a good opportunity to increase his role on our staff."

The 2017 season will be the fifth for Schwenzfeier on his alma mater's coaching staff. He spent his first season on staff as the running backs coach in 2013 and was retained by Schweigert to be a part of his first staff in 2014.

Schwenzfeier has spent the past three seasons as the outside linebackers coach, returning to the side of the ball where he starred for UND as a safety from 2007-10. He made 37 career starts and finished with 10 interceptions, including a tying the program's single-game record with three interceptions in the 2009 season-opener at Texas Tech.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me and I appreciate that Coach Schweigert has the confidence in me to take on this role," Schwenzfeier said. "I'm excited to share with future recruits the great things we have going on here at my alma mater.

"We have a lot to offer here at UND and our staff is full of great recruiters and talent evaluators, so I'm ready to coordinate those efforts and keep this program trending towards the top of the FCS."

Schweigert filled the lone opening on his coaching staff earlier this month with the addition of running backs coach Malcolm Agnew.

UND opens the 2017 season on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Utah. Kickoff against the Utes is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
