GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota hockey coach Brad Berry announced today that former UND goaltender Matt Hrynkiw has been added to his staff as a volunteer assistant coach and will work directly with the program’s goaltenders.

Hrynkiw replaces Karl Goehring, who accepted a position with the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier this summer after seven seasons as UND’s volunteer assistant.

Hrynkiw (pronounced her-INK-you) was a four-year letterwinner for UND from 2013-14 to 2016-17 and graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native appeared in 18 collegiate games and went 11-5-2 with a 2.09 goals against average, .911 save percentage and two shutouts.

“We are extremely pleased to have Matt as our volunteer goaltending coach,” said Berry. “Matt was a very important part of our program for the last four years and was instrumental in our national championship in 2016. His work ethic, attention to detail and excellent communication skills will give our goaltending group great instruction and guidance.”

Hrynkiw’s best year came during UND’s 2015-16 NCAA championship season, when he appeared in a career-high 14 games as a junior and went 10-2-2 with a 2.13 GAA and .910 save percentage. He was named the co-recipient of UND’s Unsung Hero Award after posting the 10th-best single-season GAA in school history.

During his four seasons at UND, the program compiled a 109-46-13 (.688) record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four years, including NCAA Frozen Four appearances in each of the last three.

Highly-accomplished off the ice as well, Hrynkiw was a four-time selection to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s (NCHC) All-Academic Team and was the co-recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award in 2016-17.
