JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Senior Haily Abel posted a career-best 72 (E) to grab the first-round lead in the chase for medalist honors at the Jimmie Fall Classic. Abel holds a two-stroke lead on teammate Ashlyn Guggisberg and Jamestown's Annie Nelson, who both fired a 74 (+2) on the opening 18 holes at the Jamestown Country Club. Abel finished her round with four birdies.
Abel is playing as an individual in the tournament, but her Fighting Hawk teamamtes build a huge 28-stroke lead on the rest of the five-team field. The Jimmies are in second place after posting a 336 (+48) on their home course.
Guggisberg's 74 (+2) was a season low for the freshman as those efforts helped UND post a season-low 308 (+20). Junior Hanna Peterson added a 77 (+5) and classmate Benedikte Pettersen shot a 78 (+6) in her first official time in head coach Natalie Martinson's lineup. Peterson is in fifth in the individual standings, while Pettersen is sixth. Sophomore Ally Rogers posted a 79 (+7) to round out the UND scorers and is in seventh place.
All eight Fighting Hawks competing in the tournament finishing the first round in the top 10. Junior captain Jenna Janu was ninth after an 81 (+9), while freshman Abby Schramel shot an 80 (+8) in her collegiate debut and was in eighth place. Abel, Schramel and Rebecca Huus (82; t10) make up the UND trio playing as individuals in the 36-hole event that will wrap up with second-round play on Monday morning.
