Patterson, La. -- Junior Jordan Smith was the most consistent of the Fighting Hawks during a warm and windy opening two rounds of the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate played Monday at Idlewild. The Bismarck native paced the team with a pair of 77's. Smith only made worse than a bogey on one hole and managed one birdie during his opening two loops around the par-72 layout at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild.

Smith's 36-hole total was better than half the 57-man field as he sits in 26th. Smith was seven shots clear of teammates Jack McClintock and Patrick Traynor, who both carded a 161 (+17) on Monday. Traynor closed his opening round with one of just eight eagles recorded by the field in the opening two rounds to finish at 80 (+8), then turned in an 81 (+9) in his closing loop to post 161 (+17). McClintock opened with a 79 (+7) and finished with an 82 (+10).

"We had trouble adjusting the hard fairways and I think the tough pin placements got to us today," UND head coach Matt Stricker said. "We showed some improvement throughout the day and I was impressed with how much better we struck the ball compared to last week."

Junior Ryan Riihinen was eight strokes better in his second time around the course, which included a pair of birdies as he bounced back from an opening-round 86 (+14) to card a 78 (+6) in his closing round of the day (164; +20). He made a team-high three birdies on the day.

Freshman Keaton Wolf played the opening the round, finishing with a 94 (+22), but was not able to start the second round due to an illness.

UT-Rio Grande Valley built a 10-stroke advantage through 36 holes in the race for the team title. The Vaqueros' Alvaro Hernandez leads the race for medalist honors after posting a 142 (-2) through the first two rounds. He holds a four-stroke advantage on Jacksonville State's Jesus Montenegro (146; +2) going into the final round.

UND finished with a 36-hole total of 642 (+66) and stand in eighth place. The Fighting Hawks' second-round 318 (+30) moved them up two spots in the team standings and was four strokes better than their opening round 322 (+34).
