BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- Junior Jenna Janu opened up her spring season with a 75 (+3), then backed it up with a 77 (+5) to pace the Fighting Hawks during the opening two rounds of the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Janu, who is tied for 12th after the first 36 holes, was matched in the opening round by classmate Hanna Peterson, whose 75 (+3) was the best round of her collegiate career. Peterson finished with an 81 (+9) and is tied for 23rd going into Tuesday's final round.
The Fighting Hawks opened with a 312 to sit in fifth place after the opening round, but fell down three spots in the standings by the end of the day after a shooting a second-round 330 (+42) and sit in eighth place with a 642 (+66).
"I liked how we started our day," UND head coach Natalie Martinson said. "We avoided the bigger numbers that we saw too many of in our second time around the course. That was the difference between the two rounds. I don't know if that was just mental fatigue being in a competitive situation for the first time since the fall, but I expect us to regroup and play like we did at the start of the day when we get back on the course tomorrow morning."
Freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg is tied for 46th after an 80-84 start (164; +20), while junior Benedikte Pettersen, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 29th following a 77-81 start (158; +14).
Senior Haily Abel led the Fighting Hawks with five birdies on the day and finished at 171 (+27) along with teammate Ally Rogers, who came up with the shot of the day after holing out for eagle from 150 yards on the par-4, 15th hole. It was one of only three eagles registered on the day among the 56-player field.
UNLV opened up a 35-stroke lead in the team standings thanks to a 290-283 start (573; -5). The Rebels led NDSU by only two strokes after the opening round, but were the only team to break 600 in the opening two rounds, pulling away as the Bison faded into third place following a 317 (609; +31).
Host South Dakota State moved into second place thanks to a 299 on its second loop on the course where UND will return in late April to play in its final Big Sky Championship. The Jackrabbits (608; +28) are just one stroke ahead of NDSU.
UND wraps up the Jackrabbit Invitational on Tuesday with third-round action.
