FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona's Kambree Meskill broke a scoreless tie in the 69th minute, giving the host Lumberjacks a 1-0 win over North Dakota this afternoon in Big Sky Conference play.

Meskill chipped a long, arcing shot over top of Catherine Klein after the UND goalkeeper had sprinted out of the box to win a race to a loose ball. However, her attempt to clear the ball went right to Meskill and the NAU midfielder made no mistake in depositing her first career goal.

It was the lone goal in a tightly-contested matchup that featured just nine shots on goal, six by the Lumberjacks and three by UND.

“[NAU] caused us problems defensively and our forwards failed to create anything of substance,” said UND head coach Chris Logan. “We played against a very good NAU team today and they full deserved the result.”

NAU goalkeeper Taryn Benham was the beneficiary of the Lumberjacks’ defensive stinginess, earning the victory despite having to make three saves. Catherine Klein countered by stopping five of six for the Fighting Hawks.

The Fighting Hawks return from their first Big Sky road trip of the season empty-handed, having failed to find the net in shutout losses Friday at Sacramento State and today at NAU.

Coming to altitude for a Sunday game was always going to be tough,” said Logan, “but I’m proud of the fight and we kept going to the end. We couldn’t be happier with the level of dedication and commitment in any game we have player this year.

Logan continued: “This team refuses to lay down and they will be ready to go again next weekend against two quality opponents.”

UND (4-5-3 overall) returns home to host Eastern Washington and Idaho next Friday and Sunday, respectively, at Bronson Field.

Notes: Brittany Mueller, Emma Contino and Megan Wright were responsible for UND’s three shots on goal. NAU was led by Adrian Nixt and Paige Maling, who had two each … Overall shot attempts were 18-3 in favor of the Lumberjacks … Attendance was 201 at Lumberjack Stadium.
