GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota freshman goaltender Peter Thome has been recognized by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) for his impressive collegiate debut last weekend at Wisconsin, earning NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors.

Starting in place of injured senior Cam Johnson, Thome stopped 58 of 62 shots in the series as the Fighting Hawks picked up a 3-2 win and a 2-2 overtime tie against the Badgers. Thome, a native of Minneapolis, made 36 saves in his first career start on Friday, the most saves this century by a debuting UND goalie. He turned aside all 34 shots he faced over the final two periods.

On Saturday, Thome kicked out 22 of 24 shots and finished the weekend with a .935 save percentage, the best mark of any NCHC goalie who made more than one appearance. His 58 total saves also led the NCHC on the weekend.

It is the third time this season UND has captured NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors; Johnson was a two-time recipient of the award in October.

Western Michigan's Wade Allison and Corey Schueneman were named NCHC Offensive Player and Defenseman of the Week, respectively, while St. Cloud State goaltender Dávid Hrenák was the NCHC Rookie of the Week.

The Fighting Hawks (6-2-2, 1-1-0-0 NCHC) return home this week to host NCHC rival Miami on Friday and Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
