GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Head coach Brian Jones announced the addition of Jal Bijiek to the North Dakota men's basketball program on Wednesday. Bijiek signed his National Letter of Intent at North Des Moines High School where the 6-foot-9 forward starred the past two seasons for the Polar Bears. He graduated from the school in 2017 and will enroll at UND in the fall of 2018.
"We're thrilled with the addition of Jal," Jones said. "He is a tremendous person who will impact our team not only between the lines, but also in the locker room and on campus. He is only scratching the surface as a player and will continue to blossom as he matures."
Bijiek averaged 15.2 ppg as a senior at Des Moines North en route to collection Iowa Class 4A All-State third-team honors. He led Iowa's highest classification in blocks with 82 and helped the Polar Bears to their first state tournament appearance in 26 years. Equipped with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Bijiek also garnered All-Central Iowa Metro League second-team accolades.
Bijiek played AAU basketball for Kingdom Hoops with current Fighting Hawk Tray Buchanan (East Moline, Ill.).
UND opens the 2017-18 season on Friday in a non-conference tilt against Troy in the opening game of the 53rd-annual Outriggers Resorts Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.
