Grand Forks, N.D. -- For the roughly 80 North Dakota football players that have been participating in spring practices, Friday has been the date circled on their calendars. It's not that the first 14 practices of spring were any less valuable, but the final session of the spring provides them an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of audience and do so in a game-like environment.
"It should be a fun night," UND head coach Bubba Schweigert said. "Our fans deserve a chance to see how we're progressing as a football team and we'll do our best to make it as realistic to a Saturday in the fall as we can."
The Fighting Hawks have only gone live once during their first 14 practices, so Friday's outing at the High Performance Center will allow the coaches to get a further evaluation of who is going to work their way into the playing rotation this fall. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the action is scheduled to start around 6 p.m.
"Friday's an important day for our football program," Schweigert said. "It's another opportunity for us to get better and evaluate how far we've come this spring. We're always evaluating, but this scrimmage will provide our coaches with some valuable information. It's a big day for a lot of the young guys because they are the ones that are going to get a majority of the reps in a situation like this."
Schweigert said the plan for Friday's format will be similar to the last couple of years where the Fighting Hawks will go through a mix of controlled, pin-the-hip tempo plays in various situations before running 50-60 live plays as the offensive and defensive sides square off inside the HPC.
