University of North Dakota track & field standouts Molli Detloff and Kyle Foster, along with both UND’s men’s and women’s track and field teams, have been recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for academic excellence in 2016-17.

Detloff and Foster, both of whom qualified for the national meet, punctuated their seasons by earning USTFCCCA All-Academic individual accolades for the first time. UND’s women’s and men’s squads also both earned team recognition, with both being named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.

UND’s men’s team boasted a 3.3521 grade-point average that topped all Big Sky schools. The women ranked third in the conference with a 3.4426 GPA.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, individuals must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:

  • For the indoor season, must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by

  • For the outdoor season, must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

Detloff, a rehabilitation & human services major, became UND’s first track and field All-American since the University transitioned to Division I competition in 2008-09. The Elk River, Minn., native placed 12th in the hammer throw at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in June to earn second-team honors. She was UND's first national qualifier in the Division I era, the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Meet and the conference champion in the discus.

Foster became UND’s first pole vaulter since the transition to advance to the Division I regional. A commercial aviation major from Detroit Lakes, Minn., Foster did so by breaking her own school record in April at Long Beach State.
