WHKY Game Notes: Sioux to host St. Cloud State in WCHA action

WHAT'S ON TAP: The University of North Dakota women's hockey team returns to the Ralph Englestad Arena for the first time in 2010. The Sioux will host WCHA rival St. Cloud State in a Friday/Saturday series scheduled for 7:07 p.m. and 4:07 p.m., respectively.

MEDIA INFORMATION: Most Fighting Sioux regular season home hockey games can be heard on 1440 AM ("The Fan") and on stations across the Fighting Sioux Radio Network (excluding Dec. 13 against Minnesota) with broadcaster Darrin Looker calling the action. SCOUTING REPORT: The Huskies are currently in sixth place in the league with 13 points from five wins, two ties and one shootout win ... St. Cloud State is 8-10-4 overall this season ... In conference play, the Huskies are averaging 2.45 goals while giving up 3.91 ... The Huskies have five players in double-digit points and all are seniors ... Caitlin Hogan (14-14-28) and Holly Roberts (10-18-28) lead the way with 28 points followed by Meaghan Pezon (8-17-25), Felicia Nelson (18-5-23) and Danielle Hirsch (1-10-11) ... Ashley Nixon has started 18 of 24 games in net with a 2.70 goals against average and a .925 save percentage ... They have gone 22-for-130 (.169) on the power play and have converted 92-of-110 (.836) penalty-kill opportunities.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led by head coach Jeff Giesen ... Giesen has a career record of 53-61-20 (.470).

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Huskies lead the all-time series 18-8-4, but are dead even over the last 10 games with both teams winning four, losing four and tying two. Both teams have scored 24 goals in those games.

The two teams split their series in St. Cloud, Minn., earlier this season as the Sioux won the opener, 5-4, before dropping the finale 2-3. Last season the Sioux won three of four meetings.

LAST ACTION: The Fighting Sioux earned a series split for the second time this season against the defending national champion Wisconsin Badgers.

On Friday, the Sioux used goals by team leader Alyssa Wiebe, sophomore Sara Dagenais and senior Alex Williams to go up 3-0 while redshirt freshman Jorid Dagfinrud held the Badgers scoreless until they pulled their goaltender and scored with only 27 seconds remaining. Dagfinrud mad 26 saves in the game.

In the finale, both goaltenders shined but Wisconsin was able to edge the Sioux 2-0. Badger netminder Becca Ruegsegger stopped all 27 shots she faced while Dagfinrud allowed one goal on 37 shots (UW scored an empty-net goal).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: North Dakota's Mary Loken, a freshman forward from Roseau, Minn., scored two goals, fired 11 shots on goal and was a +2 in the Fighting Sioux's 5-0 shutout road victory against Union College Jan. 2.

After a scoreless first period of play, Loken got North Dakota on the board first, scoring what proved to be the eventual game-winning goal at 15:03 of period two. She later added the first goal of the third period, scoring at the 3:02 mark, as UND built a 3-0 advantage enroute to the 5-0 win.

As a rookie, Loken has played in all of UND's 18 games so far this 2009-10 season and ranks second in scoring among her teammates with 12 points on six goals and six assists. She has two power-play goals, one game-winner and one game-tying tally to her credit.
