GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Athletics and the UND Alumni Association & Foundation have announced several fundraising and revenue highlights for fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016-June 30-2017). The highlights include $9.2 million in private gifts, along with revenue records in ticket sales, net sponsorship, media rights, and an increase in licensing royalties.
The $9.2 million in private gifts includes cash gifts, pledges, and bequest commitments. 3,352 donors gave 5,001 total gifts, in support of scholarships, the North Dakota Champions Club, gifts to the High Performance Center, and other program enhancements. Total fundraising was up almost $3 million from last year.
Over the past 10 years, the number of endowments for the benefit of UND Athletics has grown by 100, and the annual payout has grown from $100,000 to almost $1 million. Endowed gifts have a continuing impact far into the future.
"The generosity of alumni, friends, and fans of UND Athletics continues to make a difference for our student-athletes in competition, in the classroom, and in the community,” said DeAnna Carlson Zink, CEO of the UND Alumni Association & Foundation. “Every year, UND donors impact our programs through their annual gifts; in the meantime they have increased their support to endowment gifts, which will benefit student-athletes for years to come. They are creating opportunities for UND Athletics today, tomorrow, and forever.”
Ticket revenue continued to rise, setting a record for the ninth consecutive year. In FY17, ticket sales set a record of $4.4 million, besting the previous record set in Fiscal Year 2016 by over $100,000. This was the fourth consecutive year ticket revenue has topped the $4 million mark.
Licensing royalties have improved the last four years with $485,000 coming to the university in FY17. Royalties are derived from sale of licensed apparel and non-apparel products.
“We have been aggressive in attempting to find new revenue streams and grow existing funding opportunities for UND Athletics,” said Director of Athletics Brian Faison. “The results clearly show great success with our alumni and fans, but we will continue to need to increase all areas of revenue production.”
Media rights also set records for the sixth year in a row, netting $423,500 in revenue. This revenue results from the rights fee paid to UND Athletics by Midco Sports Network in addition to distribution from the Big Sky Conference and National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Net sponsorships also set a record, and sponsorship inventory controlled by UND Athletics brought in a net of $193,500. FY17 was the first time net sponsorship was more than $100,000, and more than doubled last year’s number.
"Last year alone, we became the first school ever to win football, volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball Big Sky championships in the same year, brought home the President’s Cup for the best cumulative GPA in the conference, and our student-athletes logged over 8,000 community service hours. It’s great for our student-athletes to know that there’s a supportive network of alumni, friends, and fans behind them," said Faison.
Another big week of events lies ahead for the Fighting Hawks, with the volleyball team facing Minnesota in its second straight NCAA Tournament, the hockey team hosting NCHC rival Western Michigan, women’s basketball hosting Northern Iowa, men’s basketball hosting Presentation College, and the track and field team opening the indoor season at South Dakota State.
