GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota senior Emily Emerson has been named Great West Conference Female Runner of the Week in the conference's first weekly awards of the 2011 season announced today.

Emerson has been UND's top runner at each of the first three meets this season, including a pair of top-3 finishes. The Lino Lakes, Minn., native opened the season with a third-place finish at the UND Ron Pynn Invitational, then followed that up with a runner-up showing at the Eastern Illinois Walt Crawford Invitational. Both were 5K races.

Last week at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, Emerson placed 22nd among 283 runners in the 6K run.

After taking this week off, Emerson and the Fighting Sioux will return to action Oct. 1 at the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings.
