TUCSON, Ariz. - North Dakota's Jeff Campbell (Clearwater, Fla.) picked up the first Division I All-American honor in Fighting Sioux baseball history on Wednesday when he was named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America team.

Campbell was one of five freshmen nationally to earn a utility spot on the team comprised of the country's top first-year players. He hit .326 on the season and led the team with 12 home runs and 47 RBI, while also delivering four wins and six complete games from the mound.

"We're really excited that Jeff is being recognized nationally for the outstanding freshman season he had for us," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "This is a well-deserved honor and can be attributed to the hard work he put in throughout the year."

Campbell, who was the only Sioux player to start all 56 games in 2012, finished the season with 73 hits - a total that ranks tied for second on UND's single-season charts. His 12 home runs are tied for the fourth most in a single season and he added 14 doubles and two triples to finish with a team-high 28 extra-base hits.

He was named the Great West Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned a first-team spot as a utility player on the All-GWC team. Campbell was also named to the All-GWC Tournament team after leading the sixth-seeded Sioux to a third-place finish.

Campbell is spending his summer playing for the Orlando Freedom in the Florida Collegiate Baseball League.

Former UND pitcher J.J. Scheving was the last Sioux player to an All-America honor when he was named a third team ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-American in 2004.
