WICHITA, Kan.--  Host Wichita State scored in each of the first four innings en route to a 6-1 win over North Dakota at Eck Stadium Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. UND righty reliever Patrick Riewer was the highlight, throwing four innings of one-hit baseball to shutout the Shockers over the final four innings.

"WSU is a nice club, they threw some nice arms at us," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "We had some opportunities today but they kept us off balance and pitched really well. That's how you win ball games. I thought we pitched well, too, as Tyler Ruemmele had his best outing of the year so far and Riewer pitched really well. Overall, it was good for our guys to compete against that kind of club."

WSU (10-5) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with no one out but only scratched across an unearned run as Ruemmele worked out of the jam. The Shockers would score a pair in each of the next two frames and got a solo homer in the fourth to stake themselves to a 6-0 advantage through four innings.

UND's (7-5-1) tally came in the top of the fifth when Zack Trygstad led off the inning with a single to right. He later came around to score on Sam Alt's sacrifice fly for a 6-1 Shocker advantage. Riewer shut down WSU, facing the minimum 12 batters, allowing just one hit and a walk but watched both of those get erased via double plays.

Kris Kwak had two of North Dakota's three hits with the other coming off the bat of Trygstad.

The teams will finish the two-game series Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
