GREELEY, Colo.-- Host Northern Colorado scored three third-inning runs to take the lead and held on for a 5-3 win over North Dakota in the opening game of a four-game series Friday afternoon in Great West Conference play.

"Andrew Thome threw a nice game today, good enough to win it," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "We're just not hitting enough in certain situations. We've got to get better with runners in scoring position. Offensively, we've got to scratch and fight and find good pitches to hit."

Thome threw the complete game, scattering nine hits over eight innings while striking out five without issuing a walk. The sophomore threw 101 pitches and really settled down after that third inning, allowing just four hits over the final 5.2 innings.

Down 4-1, he got a 1-2-3 fourth and recorded strikeouts to end both the fifth and sixth innings to keep the game close for UND. The offense generated a single tally in the fourth on a Jeff Campbell triple followed by a Daniel Lockhert single to inch the game to 4-2.

UND (10-13-1, 1-4 GWC) got another in the sixth as Taylor Petersen led-off with a walk and later scored on a double-play ball. North Dakota threatened again in the eighth but a caught stealing ended the inning and the Bears (13-14, 4-2) tacked-on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.

Lockhert, Kris Kwak and Ryan Reese all had a pair of hits for UND.

The teams square-off in a doubleheader set for a 1:00 p.m. start Saturday.
