GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- University of North Dakota Head Baseball Coach Jeff Dodson announced a class of five commitments in the early signing period. Brett Harrison (Winnipeg, Man.), Zach Heaser (Eyota, Minn.), Miles Lewis (Hudson, Wis.), Cameron Powell (Bourbonnais, Ill.) and Connor Trygstad (Plymouth, Minn.) will all continue their education and athletic careers at UND beginning in the fall of 2014.

"Moving into the Western Athletic Conference has expanded our reach out west," Dodson said. "But our game plan is to get the toughest blue-collar kids we can get. I want to thank associate head coach J.C. Field and assistant coach Brian DeVillers for their efforts in landing this talented class."

Brett Harrison is a six-foot-two catcher for Vauxhall Academy, the premier prep baseball program in Canada. Vauxhall has produced 13 MLB draft picks in the last seven years. Harrison was a team captain last season and hit .351 BA, with 15 runs batted in.

"He has a really good arm and quick feet and power potential," Dodson said. "He's going to be a very big contributor to our team as a freshman. He was a captain and we're thrilled to have someone with his leadershop abilities in our program."

Zach Heaser, an infielder from Dover-Eyota High School., hit .405 with 13 stolen bases last season. He also plays travel ball for the Minnesota Blizzard, a team that has produced several future UND players including six players that have signed in the past two seasons and ace pitcher Andrew Thome in 2011.

"He's always the dirtiest guy on the field," Dodson said. "He has a chip on his shoulder and those are the kinds of guys we need in our program. He's a middle of the order kind of guy with a little pop in his bat for a smaller guy."

Miles Lewis is a switch-hitting catcher/outfielder at Hudson High School and also plays on a travel team with the Racine Hitters. As a prep, he hit .353 and was an honorable mention all-state honoree as well as an academic all-district member. He participated in the prestigious Perfect Game National showcase.

"He can give you two guys in the same uniform with his switch-hitting capabilities," Dodson said. "He's got plus speed and we feel he's only going to get better."

Cameron Powell is a dual player, an outfielder and right-handed pitcher at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School. He also plays his travel ball with Rhino Baseball.

"We're lucky to get a guy like Cameron," Dodson said. "We're thrilled to have him come in. He's diligent in the classroom and we're just scratching the surface with what he'll be able to do for us. We're expecting him to contribute right away as a freshman."

Connor Trygstad is another dual player, a right-handed pitcher and utility player. He hit .353 with 21 RBI and was 3-2 with a 1.31 ERA with 22 K in 32 IP at Wayzata American Legion. He helped his prep team to the Minnesota AAA State Tournament for the first time in 23 years. His brother, Zack, is currently a senior and three-year starter at UND.

"He already throws in the mid to upper 80s, but his arm and his body dictate that he's capable of more and we're happy he's going to be developing here at UND," Dodson said. "We're pleased with his ability to throw strikes at an early age and with our strength and conditioning program, we feel he'll only get better."

The 2014 UND schedule begins Feb. 28 at the University of Kansas.
