BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- Junior Jeff Campbell earned his second straight complete game win Sunday, defeating Bakersfield 6-3 in the finale of a Western Athletic Conference series. Campbell had a shutout rolling through eight innings before battling to finish out the game after four hits in the first five batters.
"Another great outing from Jeff Campbell today," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "The intensity our guys brought to the park after a heartbreaking loss last night was great to see as a coach. We faced a great arm today and we were able to work some counts and get some baserunners. They made some mistakes and we capitalized. We're really pleased with the way Campbell performed and this will be big as we continue league play."
UND (3-12, 3-3) took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning with the aid of just one hit. Campbell walked to leadoff the inning and then after two were down, Dalton Parrott walked and Luis Calvo reached on a fielder's choice. Dalton Leuschke coaxed a walk and then Jacob Threlkeld drove in a pair with a single up the middle.
North Dakota tacked on two more in the sixth as Daniel Lockhert drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Campbell drew a bases-loaded walk for a 5-0 UND lead. It would be plenty for Campbell on the hill, who held the Roadrunners without a run thourgh eight on five hits.
Bakersfield attempted a rally with a leadoff triple followed by an RBI single and a run-scoring triple and another run-producing single. But, Campbell got a strikeout and a bounceout to end the threat and give him his second win of the season.
Parrott and Calvo each had two hits to lead the UND offense. The top four spots in the order each produced at least one RBI.
Campbell's final line were a complete game with nine hits and three runs with four strikeouts.
North Dakota is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule this weekend with a three-game set against Northern Colorado. Check UNDsports.com for more information on any changes due to weather or field conditions.
