BISMARCK, N.D.-- Jeff Campbell won his third straight start to lift North Dakota to a 2-1 win and a three-game series sweep over Northern Colorado Sunday in Western Athletic Conference play. It marked the first series sweep of a conference opponent since UND went to NCAA Division I.

"I thought our kids really came out and played well today to give us our first conference sweep," said UND head coach Jeff Dodson. "They came out pretty loose today. We stranded way too many runners, but I was thrilled about Patrick Riewer's play this weekend and he came through for us today. "

Campbell was dealing early, striking out the first two batters he faced on just six pitches. He added two more punchouts in the second and with two down in the seventh, he had set down nine straight batters while only allowing two hits over 6.2 innings pitched.

He had an early 1-0 lead after the first when he helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to score Jacob Threlkeld. UND would leave the bases loaded, however, in that inning and nine more over the next four frames combined to cling to a tight 1-0 edge.

Bryan Tibbits finally broke the string of consecutive hitters set down by Campbell by homering to right field to tie the score. But, the North Dakota offense was quick to respond. In the bottom half of that inning, Ryan Reese coaxed a leadoff walk and Patrick Riewer would later drive him in on a long ground-rule double to deep center.

Campbell and the UND bullpen made it hold up. The righty worked into the ninth before giving way to Ellery Bresnahan (strikeout) and Brock Johnson (groundout) who got the final two batters and handed North Dakota its first three-game sweep in its new conference.

Taylor Petersen had three hits Sunday and his bid for a fourth was robbed by a diving catch by right fielder Ben Netzel to end the eighth. Riewer continued his hot weekend at the plate, reaching in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

North Dakota will step outside on conference play next weekend with a three-game series at Creighton April 4-6.
