HOUSTON, Texas-- Host Houston Baptist claimed a 9-5 win over North Dakota in the Great West Conference opener for both teams Friday. The home team got a three-run homer to break a 4-4 tie in the 6th to garner the victory.

"We didn't finish innings today," UND Head Baseball Coach Jeff Dodson said. "We gave up eight of nine runs with two outs and we left 15 runners on base which means we are not hitting in the clutch with two outs. We need to regroup and get ready for a doubleheader tomorrow."

UND (9-10-1) struck first with a single run in the third on a Kris Kwak leadoff single, later coming home on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Petersen. But, the Huskies posted three in the bottom of the frame to take the early edge.

North Dakota immediately re-tied the score at 3-3 in the next inning when three straight UND batters reached to load the bases. Jacob Threlkeld grounded out to score the first run and Kwak drove in another with a sac fly to right.

HBU again took the advantage, but again UND acted quickly to retie the score. Petersen roped a one-out double and came around on Jeff Campbell's single to centerfield.

The big blow came in the bottom of that frame with a three-run homer that put HBU in front for good.

Sophomore Andrew Thome was saddled with the loss for UND, throwing into the eighth inning and absorbing all nine HBU runs, eight earned. He added three strikoeouts and a pair of walks. Petersen, Patrick Vandoorne and Campbell each had two hits for North Dakota. Kwak scored a pair of runs and drove in another.

The teams continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader slated for a noon start.
