Jeff Campbell hit a pair of homeruns, one inside the park, to lead UND to a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind win over Chicago State during a steady rain at Kraft Memorial Field Thursday afternoon in the opener of a four-game series. Campbell's three-run homer in the eighth helped North Dakota rally from down three to post its eighth win in the last 10 contests.GRAND FORKS, N.D.--
Campbell's first shot was a towering flyball that he tucked inside the foul pole down the left field line for a 1-0 UND advantage in the second inning. That lead stood up until the sixth inning when the continual downpour began to wreak havoc.
Four wild pitches, a hit batter, two walks and an error all helped conspire against UND (21-19-1, 11-10 GWC) to help produce four Chicago State (7-41, 2-21) runs in the sixth. North Dakota recorded just one hit in the final two innings, but it was a big one. After a run scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice in the seventh, Campbell made a pair of hit batters hurt the Cougars in the eighth.
Facing a full count, Campbell stroked a long fly ball to left centerfield that got between the left and centerfielders. After it fell, both Taylor Petersen and Patrick Riewer scampered home with Campbell chugging right behind them with his slide beating the relay throw home for a 5-4 UND edge.
Reid Jungling (3-0) made it stand up, working the final 3.1 innings without allowing a hit to slam the door on that sixth-inning rally and snuff out any attempt at a comeback with a 1-2-3 ninth.
UND starter Andrew Thome (5-5) was on a pitch count with the Great West Conference Tournament set to begin Tuesday in Newark, N.J. The sophomore righty was locating his pitches well, throwing 67 pitches with 50 of them in the strike zone, but he was forced to leave with a no-decision after a walk and an RBI single to tie it at 1-all in the sixth.
North Dakota had just four hits in the win, two coming from Campbell with Patrick Vandoorne and Petersen recording the others.
The teams continue the series Friday with a doubleheader slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
