UND sweeps singles to down Weber State

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s tennis team won its second dual in a row and started off its home schedule with a 6-1 win against Weber State on Friday at the Choice Health and Fitness Center.

The dual started off closely contested as two of the three doubles matches needed a tie breaker to decide a victor. In the No. 3 doubles UND’s Mikaela Bennett and Lacey Sprinkel defeated Michelle Warwick and Ashley Tanner, 8-3. Unfortunately, UND was drew the short straw for the two remaining doubles matches, as Weber State took the doubles point to start the dual, 1-0.

No. 1 doubles pair of Stephanie Petsis and Stephanie Biehn lost 8-7 (7-4), while the No. 2 pair of Callie Ronkowski and Faith Lee lost 8-7 (8-6).

With the close losses to Weber State, UND didn’t get down on itself and rallied to dominate singles play.

Playing No. 3 singles, Sprinkel crushed her opponent, winning in two sets without losing a single game. Both Bennett, No. 6 singles, and Lee, No. 5 singles, won their matches in two sets, giving UND a 3-1 lead in the dual.

Current Big Sky women’s tennis Player of the Week, Callie Ronkowski extended her winning streak at No. 2 singles, downing WSU’s Kristi Elmer in two sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Ronkowski’s win gave UND the deciding point to secure UND’s second win of the season.

Finishing out singles action, both Biehn, No. 4 singles, and Petsis (No. 1 singles) dropped their first sets, but rebounded to win in three sets.

North Dakota returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 21, hosting Idaho State at 1 p.m. The dual will be held concurrently with the men’s dual at Choice Health and Fitness.
