OGDEN, Utah -- The Big Sky Conference announced the 2013 Scholar Athlete Award winners Wednesday, honoring a male and female student-athlete from each league instiution. The award winners were selected by their respective institutions based upon athletic and academic performance during the 2012-13 school year. Kirsten Haas (track and field) and Brett Cameron (football) were the recipients from the University of North Dakota.
Haas, an international studies major with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average, was named to both the 2013-13 Big Sky Conference Winter All-Academic Team and the UND Athletics Director’s Fall 2012 Honor Roll. The Belgrade, Mont., native recently earned her second straight CoSIDA academic all-district nod and was the recipient of UND’s Howard & Ann and Brian & Terrie Dahl Impact Scholarship. She was also a finalist for UND’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
On the track, Haas placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2013 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship. She ran a personal-record time of 1 minute, 1.41 seconds, in the same event at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational, and helped UND win the 4x400 relay at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational.
Cameron completed his degree in biology at UND in December and was a 2012 All-Big Sky Academic honoree. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, product recently was awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, one of 87 male and female student-athletes in their final year of competition nationally to earn that distinction. He was also named to the Great West All-Academic Teams in 2010 and 2011.
On the field, Cameron will go down as one of the best punters in UND history. He was a three-year starter during his time at UND, finishing his tenure tied with the second best career average of 40.6 yards per punt. He had his best season in 2012 when he averaged 42.1 yards per boot as a senior, which was the fourth best single-season average in program history. In the winter, he signed a professional contract to play for his hometown Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League.
To qualify for the Big Sky Scholar Athlete Award, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a member of the graduating class and/or have completed their last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and be a letterwinner.
