VERMILLION, S.D. – North Dakota sophomore Ke-Ke Burks shattered her own school record in the weight throw today at the University of South Dakota Twilight Meet.

Burks, who originally set the standard last year at the Big Sky Conference Championship, recorded a throw of 56 feet, 1 inch today. Her previous record had stood at 54-06.75.

The Madison, Wis., native also hit a Big Sky automatic qualifier with her throw.

Today’s meet served as North Dakota’s final tune-up prior to next weekend’s Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship.

With the conference meet a week away, UND only participated approximately half of its team in today's meet, according to head coach Kevin Galbraith.

"This being our last meet before the conference, it really comes down making individual choices to maximize our performances at the conference meet," said Galbraith.

"People who already had a qualifying mark and maybe were already on a roll, or whose event isn’t technically based, we’d leave them home and rest them up so they’re ready to go. They don’t need more racing right now," continued Galbraith.

But Galbraith was certainly pleased with those who did perform.

Sophomore Paige Slemmons also turned in a solid performance for the second straight week. The Fargo, N.D., native placed third in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 60-meters, with a time of 26.21 seconds in the 200 and 8.07 seconds in the 60.

UND also boasted the second- and third-place finishers in the high jump. Junior Rochelle Robb cleared 5 feet, 5 inches to claim runner-up honors, while classmate Ashley Fedie took third with a mark of 5-03.00.

The 2014 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship runs Feb. 27 to March 1 in Pocatello, Idaho.
