North Dakota opens Big Sky Conference play this weekend, making the trip to Montana to play Montana State and Montana on Friday and Saturday, respectively. UND will be finishing off a 10-match roadswing before returning for three straight at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center next Sep. 26-30.
ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL COLLEGIATE CLASSIC RECAP
Led by Most Valuable Player Nikki Husfeldt, North Dakota won all three matches at Tulane last Friday and Saturday. UND outlasted Florida A&M in the opener, 3-2, then swept past Texas Southern before a four-set win over the hosts and previously-undefeated Tulane to take the team title. Senior Lisa Parlich was also named to the all-tournament team after combining for 45 kills in the three matches.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Montana State is 2-9 on the season, with wins over Stetson and Akron ... MSU’s Kennadie Clute entered the week first in the league in total kills (158) and second in kills per set (3.85) ... Loni Kreun is fifth (3.24 kills/set) ... Montana State took both meetings last year, a pair of five-set duels ... MSU now leads the all-time series, 2-1.
SCOUTING THE LADY GRIZ
UM is 3-6 overall this season, with two of those wins coming last week at the Lone Star Showdown (at Texas Tech and vs. Cal State Fullerton) ... Friday’s match vs. Northern Colorado will be Montana’s home opener ... Montana leads the Big Sky Conference in blocking (2.56/set) ... ... North Dakota has won four straight in the series-- including a pair of sweeps last season-- and holds as 4-1 record all-time against UM.
The University of North Dakota volleyball program holds a 597-713-3 (.456) record all-time since the first game was played on Sept. 22, 1976. Under head coach Ashley Hardee, UND is 92-40 (.697).

North Dakota is picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Big Sky Coaches Poll ... UND returns nearly its entire roster for a season ago as North Dakota did not have a senior on its roster in 2012 ... North Dakota is 92-40 (.697) in head coach Ashley Hardee’s tenure (5 seasons) ... UND is in its second season in the Big Sky Conference, qualifying for the league tournament a year ago with a 10-10 league record.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
UND appears in several categories in the national statistics led by a 56th rank in team blocks per set (2.53). Coming into the week, UND is hitting .250 on the young season, 62nd-best in the country. Senior Lisa Parlich is 20th in NCAA D-I in hitting percentage with her .447 clip which ranks second in the Big Sky Conference. Ronni Munkeby is 69th with 1.24 blocks per set, tops in the league.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
North Dakota is tops in the Big Sky Conference in hitting percentage at .243 and blocks per set (2.56) at last published rankings. Senior Ronni Munkeby is setting pace in the league in blocks per set (1.24).
PARLICH POUNDING OUT KILLS
Senior Lisa Parlich generated a new career-high 23 kills in the five-set win over Florida A&M Sep. 13. That mark bested her previous high of 17. Overall at the tournament, Parlich hit an astounding .577 with 45 kills on just four attack errors.
Junior Nikki Husfledt recently became the fourth member of the 3,000-assist club at UND, moving past Megan Langseth (2,952) as well.. Husfeldt is approaching Lisa Luebke’s thrid-place mark of 3,277 and has her entire senior season to try to chase down school record holder Holly Welter’s 4,698 mark.

SNAPPED AT NINE
UND head coach Ashley Hardee had his perfect 9-0 mark against South Dakota snapped Monday as the Coyotes won, 3-1 for their first win oveer UND since 2008. The schools, once conference members in the Great West together, have played each other in every year since Hardee has come on campus.
HARDEE AGAINST THE DAKOTA SCHOOLS
Coach Hardee can brag about beating the other Dakota schools to the tune of 15-3 combined. Hardee has a 9-1 record against South Dakota, 4-1 against South Dakota State (including a win this season) and 2-1 vs. North Dakota State.

UND FOURTH IN PRESEASON BIG SKY POLL
The University of North Dakota volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2013 Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Reigning regular-season champion Portland State was the top vote-getter with seven first-place votes (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams). Idaho State (2 first-place votes) was second with Big Sky Tournament champion Northern Colorado third. Northern Arizona finished fifth in the voting and had the other two first-place nods.
RIGHT ON PAR-LICH
Senior Lisa Parlich was named to the UND Classic All-Tournament Team. It marks the second straight season for that honor after she was the MVP of the 2012 tourney.
YOU BETTY RECOGNIZE
North Dakota is 68-36 all-time at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, which opened prior to the 2004 season. Since 2008, UND is a staggering 46-10 (.821) including a school-record 13 wins in 2011.

HITTING THE BOOKS
The UND volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award with a cumulative 3.461 grade point average last season. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Midco Sports Network will televise three UND volleyball matches as part of its broadcast deal that includes football, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. The first televised volleyball match is the highly-anticipated in-state battle with North Dakota State on Sep. 30. An Oct. 24 Big Sky match against Montana is the second on the docket and the Nov. 21 match against Northern Arizona rounds out the TV schedule. All three matches will air in high definition.
