Ogden, UTAH – North Dakota volleyball player Nikki Husfeldt has been awarded the Big Sky SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) Outstanding Community Service Award presented by Red Lion Hotels.

Husfeldt is a Kinesiology major and has maintained a 3.70 GPA while at the University of North Dakota.

Husfeldt, a junior from Andover, Minn., has been an active member of UND's SAAC as the volleyball representative since her freshman year. It is rare that a freshman is chosen to serve as one the team representatives, but she has been a committed and responsible asset to the SAAC at UND. Recently she has been elected to serve as the Secretary, and is expected to be re-elected next season.

Her impressive list of volunteer endeavors began during her freshman year, as she spent over 30 hours volunteering at events with the Grand Forks YMCA, Special Olympics, Red River Valley Gymnastics, and Altru Foundation's Spin for Kids event which was organized by UND's SAAC.

During 2011-12 Husfeldt again devoted 30 hours of her own time. She participated in UND's "The Big Event", a student-athlete driven cleanup effort of the campus and surrounding communities. She also participated in the SAAC Food Drive, UND Move-In Weekend, and various Grand Forks Special Olympics events. In 2012-13 Husfeldt continued her service to her community with similar events, totaling over 20 hours last year.

Husfeldt has already put in 18 hours of community service for the 2013-14 season. She has been active with Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and UND Move-In Weekend, and the SAAC Halloween Bash.

The Big Sky Conference and Red Lion Hotels would like to congratulate Husfeldt on her impressive list of accomplishments. Her leadership, community service, and academic success is an example of the excellence that is strived for by all Big Sky athletes.

The Big Sky SAAC Community Service Award presented by Red Lion Hotels aims to acknowledge the dedication Big Sky athletes have not just on the playing surface or classroom, but also their efforts to improve their communities. Red Lion Hotels is a proud supporter of the Big Sky Conference and the SAAC Community Service Award. With more than 50 locations in the western United States, Red Lion Hotels is there to serve teams, fans, and alumni of Big Sky Conference schools.
