MANKATO, Minn. --- The No. 9 University of North Dakota women's hockey team was led by sophomore Josefine Jakobsen's (Aalborg, Denmark) first collegiate hat trick in a 4-2 win Friday night at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

North Dakota improves to 17-10-0 (12-9-0-0 WCHA) while the Mavericks drop to 9-15-3 (5-13-3-0 WCHA).

After the first minute of the game where MSU carried the play in the UND zone, it was almost all on the other end of the ice in the first period. UND went on to outshoot the Mavericks 19-5 in the frame but MSU netminder Danielle Butters was perfect as the game went scoreless through the first 20 minutes.

UND solved the riddle of Butters in the second period scoring three goals including one at even strength, one on the power play and one shorthanded.

Michelle Karvinen (Rodovre, Denmark) opened the game's scoring as she took it into the zone on a one-on-one opportunity, cut back into the slot with the puck on her forehand and as Butters was crossing the crease fired it back against her momentum, off the post and into the net.

Shortly after Monique Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) was taken down hard into the boards and Lauren Smith received a five minute major for boarding.

Josefine Jakobsen quickly made them pay only 10 seconds into the major penalty at 5:51 of the period and with 4:50 still remaining on the power play and it looked like UND could blow the game wide open.

But the Mavericks would then kill off the next 3:20 of the power play and got a whistle in the defensive zone. Idalski would take his timeout to keep his top unit out there with 90 seconds remaining on the man-advantage, but UND failed to add another goal on the major penalty.

MSU would then get its first power play of the game with 8:39 remaining in the middle frame as Monique Lamoureux was called for checking.

UND would kill that penalty, but would be called for another infraction shortly after and MSU's scored on the delayed penalty of hooking by Sam LaShomb (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Lauren Smith, who had the major boarding call, scored her team-leading 18th goal of the season.

Josefine Jakobsen would tally a shorthanded goal however to regain the two goal lead. Jakobsen took the puck towards the net on a breakaway and made a great deke to her backhand and roofed it over Butters glove.

UND thought it had another power-play goal at 5:23 of the third period as Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.)  jammed a rebound past Butters which was called a good goal on the ice, but after a lengthy review it was ruled the net was off.

UND would get the fourth goal as Jakobsen banged in a rebound at 13:04 of the third period for the hat trick.

MSU would make it interesting with 2:35 remaining scoring on another delayed penalty to pull within two and still have a power-play attempt to get it within one.

MSU would then get a 5-on-3 power play for 55 seconds and close out the last 1:31 of regulation on the power play but couldn't find the back of the net.

North Dakota went on to out shoot the Mavericks 45-22 in the game as Shelby Amsley-Benzie (Warroad, Minn.) picked up her 10th win of the season stopping 20-of-22 shots. Butters made 41 saves in the losing effort.

Both of MSU's goals came on delayed penalties but UND did go 4-for-4 on the penalty-kill and converted 1-of-3 power plays.

North Dakota will look for its first sweep over MSU in Mankato tomorrow afternoon. Opening puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m.
