GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota senior center Carter Rowney has signed an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Abbotsford Heat, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Calgary Flames, and will join the team for the rest of the season.

An undrafted free agent from Sexsmith, Alberta, Rowney played in 150 career games at North Dakota and collected 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 career points. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder scored 28 of his 32 career goals over his last two seasons, including a career-high 18 as a junior in 2011-12.

Rowney served as an assistant captain as a senior in 2012-13, scoring 10 goals and a career-high 17 assists in 41 games. He was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 11 after a 5-point series in a win and a tie against sixth-ranked Denver.

Rowney was named UND’s Most Improved Player as a junior in 2011-12 after a career season that included 18 goals and 33 points. He also ranked second on the team with a career-high nine power-play goals.

During his collegiate career, Rowney helped lead UND to four NCAA postseason appearances, one Frozen Four appearance, three Broadmoor Trophies as WCHA playoff champion, and one MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular season champion. A managerial finance and corporate accounting major, Rowney was a two-time selection to the All-WCHA Academic Team.

Rowney is UND’s fourth player to sign a professional contract contract since the conclusion of the 2012-13 season, joining seniors Danny Kristo (Montreal Canadiens) and Andrew MacWilliam (Toronto Maple Leafs), as well as junior Derek Forbort (Los Angeles Kings).
